2016 VAFCS Award Winners
Awards were presented at the 2016 VAFCS Annual Conference in Charlottesville, VA on April 22, 2016.

Debbie Will
2016 Outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences Professional in Business, Government and Human Services
  • Debbie Will has been a dedicated member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences for 33 years. She served as the VAFCS State President, Vice President of Public Affairs and Membership and chaired committees for public relations, nominating, special awards, and the annual conference. This year Debbie was selected by AAFCS as a juror for the national Teacher of the Year Award.

In her professional career, Debbie is the State Adviser for Virginia FCCLA. In 2015 she was appointed by national FCCLA as a three-year term member of the Competitive Events Advisory Team.  She served as the national coordinator for student competition in 2016. In 2015 she designed and spearheaded the fundraising effort for Virginia FCCLA's 70th Anniversary Campaign bringing in a total of almost $20,000.
 
Jane Henderson
2016 Outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences Professional in Extension
  • Jane Henderson, a 20-year member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, is a member of VAFCS and VEAFCS. She has provided leadership in both organizations as President of the Virginia Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and as VAFCS Vice President of Programs and chair of the nominating committee. She facilitated the update of the Extension association website, planned professional development meetings, and served on university faculty search committees. From 2013-2015 she served as judge for the AAFCS Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STAR Events State Competitions.
 
In her role as FCS Unit Coordinator for the Amelia County Extension Office of Virginia Tech, Jane has conducted Diabetes education programs in partnership with the Virginia Tech Center for Public Health Practice and Research for educators from the McGuire VA Medical Center Rural Health team. She is active on local resource councils and conducted work force skills and financial literacy trainings for domestic violence agencies and prisoner re-entry programs. She also serves as the chair of the Central District Program Leadership Team (DPLT) where she planned and facilitated in-service professional development trainings that addressed generational and cultural diversity for Extension Agents.
 
Nicholas Zimmerman
2016 Mary Margaret Barry Award
  • Nicholas Zimmerman, a Family and Consumer Sciences Education major, just completed his junior year at Bridgewater College. Nicholas has been recognized as a leader in his school and community. In addition to his outstanding academic performance, he serves as a role model for other students. His excitement, dedication, and passion for the field of Family and Consumer Sciences makes a positive impact on everyone he meets. He was selected as the summer intern for AAFCS and we are fortunate to have him represent the Student Unit on the VAFCS Board of Directors for the second year.

Haley Copeland

2016 Outstanding Graduating High School Senior Award in Occupational Studies
  • Haley Copeland, a graduating senior from Strasburg High School, is the Virginia FCCLA State President leading over 5,000 students. She has received four gold medals and 1 silver in FCCLA STAR events and completed the "Launch" National Leadership Academy. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society and was captain of both her volleyball and basketball teams. It doesn't seem like she'd have spare time, but Haley manages to volunteer as coach for the local Parks and Recreation volleyball teams and volunteers at a local daycare.

Micah McMullen
2016 Outstanding Graduating High School Senior Award in Comprehensive Studies,
  • Micah McMullen, a graduating senior from Henrico High School, is described as a well-rounded student who is a reliable leader and supportive team player. She was proud to be accepted into the highly selective Partnership for the Future program. For the past three summers she was the intern for the Better Housing Coalition. Micah was active in FCCLA and on the school soccer team. She is a committed Head Scout for her Girl Scout Troop and is a youth leader for her school dance team. She gives back to the community by volunteering for Feed the City and the annual Back to School Drive at her church.
